TMJ and Tooth Grinding

What is TMJ and what causes it?

Grinding or clenching teeth while sleeping may occur especially in those who are experiencing pressure or stress. Tooth grinding is hazardous as it affects the mechanics of your mouth and can cause severe wear of the teeth. When the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is injured or damaged, it can lead to localized pain disorder known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Causes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome include:

  • injury to the teeth or jaw
  • misalignment of the teeth or jaw
  • teeth grinding
  • poor posture
  • stress
  • arthritis
  • gum chewing

How do I know if I suffer from TMJ syndrome?

If you hear a clicking or popping in your jaw joints, you may be suffering from TMJ dysfunction. Additionally, you may experience headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears and a dull ache around the ears that spreads to the neck, back and shoulder areas.

Treatment for TMJ

Please consult your dentist if you experience tooth grinding or TMJ problems as your dentist will assess your condition and can recommend treatment. You may require an oral splint to be made. The dentist will explain the design of the oral splint to you as well as its benefits.

An acrylic oral splint is usually worn at night and provides relief from symptoms as it separates the upper and lower teeth. Thus, the teeth are protected from further damage and soreness of the chewing muscles and jaw joints is relieved.

All our splints are 100% Australian made.
